LEED BY EXAMPLE

Concurrent with the development of alternative energy, the other main factor for reducing use of fossil fuels is simple conservation.  Building are huge users of energy and retrofitting conservation strategies has become a big industry.  New buildings can be designed from inception to be energy efficient and models of sustainability.

The LEED program (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) was developed to set standards for sustainable design. LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system,  providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

The Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park is LEED Platinum Certified. It was commissioned by the 1999 Green Building Ordinance.

Vancouver Convention Center LEED Platinum design.

The highest level of achievement in the LEED system is a LEED Platinum rating.  Examples of buildings designed to meet these standards are true champions of innovation when it comes to sustainable practices and energy efficiency.
